The module will provide students with an understanding of the history of
mosaic in the Classical World (covering the Greek, Punic and Roman cultures)
through Late Antiquity and into the Byzantine and Medieval periods. Alongside the historical context students will engage in several practical sessions to explore the materials and techniques in ancient manufacture of mosaic.

The module provides students with knowledge of art and design theory as applied in mosaic, with focus on drawing, colour theory, amendmenti and installation plans. Students will gain skills in conceiving and analysing complex designs, as well as developing their creativity and readiness to design for mosaic.

The module provides students with an in-depth introduction to the techniques of making mosaic in a professional workshop. Students will work with a range of advanced tools (hammer and hardie) and a diversity of materials (smalti, marble, etc.) based on traditional and contemporary methods into which they conduct further investigation. They will handle complex processes of installing and presenting mosaic in a professional capacity, while also identifying problems and issues that may arise in the fabrication process.
Students on the module will focus on Roman mosaics (Term 1) and Byzantine mosaics in (Term 2), while making their own project in Term 3.
